"I worked with James after a great couples counselor referred me in order to help me practice being present in my body. Coming to somatic experiencing sessions, I had a lot of heavier content on my mind including the questioning of my gender identity and sexuality, my trauma history and its impact on the present, and I was trying to save my long-term partnership. Within sessions, I was invited to stay in the moment and follow sensations with mindfulness and curiosity- which gave me enough space to slowly learn and reconnect with my body in new ways. James was able to help me turn down the volume of my mind’s inner dialogue, and gently guide me through important SE principles such as titration, pendulation, coupling/decoupling and more. Going into SE, I had been practicing mindfulness through meditation and self-exploration of Buddhism, had years of therapy and mental health treatment including EMDR treatment under my belt, and was a clinician myself. However, I struggled greatly to not pathologize myself as the issue in all contexts. I felt I was also grasping/holding onto any sense of stability I could, including through old narratives about myself that no longer served me, codependent patterns in my relationships, and often avoiding staying present in my body outside of meditation. SE felt like a bridge to disentangling myself from attempting to control myself (including my body), others (despite it coming from a place of concern), and general outcomes in life. It was also very impactful to sense sharing both conversation and silence with a person who believed in me and my inherent worth- as it was in the present no matter how flawed I believed myself to be. I remember the experience of slowing down and removing myself from the context of my thinking brain was very challenging, but necessary in forming a foundation in bottom-up processing. There was a particular type of session that stands out to me- when James would assist me in responding to past pain through a visualization of pushing it away over the mountain or even fighting back against it in a physical pose that felt really significant. I remember we were exploring the sensations and feelings around a moment where I learned from peers and parents in a Catholic school program that it was not safe to be queer/gender nonconforming. This moment set off years of repression and self-hatred that contributed to suicidality. But through SE, it was as if James and I were both present in the memory for the child I was at the time, validating their feelings and then supporting them in fighting back and getting in touch with the reflexes needed to move through and no longer internalize it. Experiencing SE through the guidance of James helped me to form a connection to myself and the present that has helped me to shift my understanding of healing. "
